I don't think comic book "collector" really applies to me at all. I’m probably more of a comic book "appreciator". My interest has always been in what can be accomplished with the medium of "visual story-telling".

I'm not sure exactly where this interest of mine came from. I do know that as a child, comic books allowed me to improve my reading skills. “The Mighty Thor" helped me develop an interest in old legends, and “Challengers of the Unknown" got me crazy about science fiction. The combination of words and pictures was a perfect springboard for my childhood imagination.

How does one learn to appreciate comic book art? There is a classic example that sheds quite a bit of light on the subject. Writer Scott Macloud just explains what makes a comic book stand out in his best selling book Understanding Comics. The book, first published in 1994, has been translated into 13 languages and is practically a bible for students studying graphic illustration

  in novels.

On the internet there are some cool comic book sites to be found—hundreds and hundreds of them as a matter of fact. More than a few are dedicated to super heroes and the like. But there are some choice sites that I would visit, because they provide some great resources that discuss the comic book as an art form. Noteworthy among them is a great article and interview at rcharvey. corn, which discusses the impact of several artists and writers in the field.

I have a huge admiration for anyone who can produce comic stories that can make readers think, laugh and cry. Maybe make them dream.

Check it out. Spend two dollars on a comic book and read it with your children. Or better yet, search out some of the more “adult" tides and read it for yourself. You may find yourself enjoying what you see and read. You may even find yourself wanting more.

  1. What does the author mainly intend to talk about in Paragraph 2?

  A. Influence of comic books on reading in childhood.

  B. Ways to improve one's reading skills.

  C. Subjects of comic books.

  D. Popularity of two comic books.

  2. The underlined part "sheds quite a bit of light on" (Para.3)

  means "____".

  Adoes a basic research on

  B. causes a fierce debate on

  C. provides new information on

  D. makes a quick survey on

  3. If you want to know a few good writers of comic books, you will probably ____.

  A. read Understanding Comics

  B. visit

  rcharvey.corn

  Cbuy some comic books

  D. turn to comic story writers

  4. What does the author encourage people to do?

  A. Develop an interest in old legends and science fiction.

  B. Share a comic book with children.

  C. Produce some comic stories.

  D. Spend money and time appreciating comic books.

細讀第二段可知 “I'm not sure exactly where this interest of mine came from. I do know that as a child, comic books allowed me to improve my reading skills.”

由第四段最后一句話 “Noteworthy among them is a great article and interview at rcharvey. corn, which discusses the impact of several artists and writers in the field.”

由最后一段 “Check it out. Spend two dollars on a comic book and read it with your children.”

“Drink your milk. It’s good for you!” You’ve probably heard that many times, and it’s true.Milk contains calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong. The U.S.government even requires milk as part of the National School Lunch Program, saying that students should drink one cup of fat-free or low-fat milk at each meal.

Last Thursday, however,a group of doctors asked the government to remove milk from the lunch program. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says,“Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein, all of which have negative effects on health.” “One of the only reasons people talk about dairy,or promote it,is that it is going to help build strong bones,” says Dr.Neal Barnard, president of the PCRM.There are better and healthier ways to get calcium such as eating beans, broccoli, cereals and tofu.Orange juice and soymilk that have calcium added to them also supply the nutrient.

Of course, calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth, but your genes, how much vitamin D you take in and getting an hour’s worth of exercise every day all play a part.

Some nutritionists disagree with the idea that milk isn’t important.Keri Gans,a dietitian, says,“I think it’s irresponsible to take away this beverage that children enjoy, especially among those who are unable to meet their nutrient needs for the day,and remove it from the lunch line.”

The U.S.government is studying the request of the PCRM,but a decision may be a long way off.Meanwhile,Marion Nestle,a professor at New York University, puts it best:“Milk has nutrients.Other foods have the same nutrients. It’s just a food.Like other foods, too much might be a problem.”

1.Why does the US government ask students to drink one cup of milk at lunch time?

A.They have been told many times.

B.They have taken the PCRM’s advice.

C.Fat-free or low-fat milk is less expensive.

D.Milk helps build students’ strong bones.

2.The underlined word “beverage” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “

  ”.

  A.gene

  B.idea

  C.milk

  D.lunch

3.What can we learn from Marion Nestle’s words?

A.Milk has more nutrients than other foods.

B.Milk is just a kind of common food.

C.Other foods also contain much calcium.

D.Too much nutrient lies in other foods.

4.What does the above text mainly talk about?

A.The best way to get the most calcium.

B.The connection between milk and health.

C.Different opinions about the importance of milk.

D.Whether to take milk off the school-lunch menu.

根據第一段中的“Milk contains calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong.”

If a monkey takes a photograph, who owns the rights to it?The monkey or the owner or the camera?

That’s the question being discussed all over the Internet about this toothy selfie:a monkey “took” of itself with photographer David Slater’s camera.

Slater traveled to Indonesia in 2011 to get the perfect image of a black monkey. One of the monkeys came to check out his camera and took hundreds of photos of itself.

“They were quite naughty, jumping all over my equipment, and it looked like they were already posing for the camera when one hit the button,”Slater said.“The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it.At first it scared the rest of them away but they soon came back—it was amazing to watch.”

Most of the photos were unclear, but one of them was a cute self-portrait of a monkey appearing to grin.

Now the image has been uploaded to Wikimedia and Slater is not pleased. He has asked Wikimedia to remove the image from its pages because he owns the rights to it.It is included in Wikimedia Commons that is a collection of over 22 million images and videos that are free to use online and allows other websites to use it free of charge,it is harming his right to make money from “his” photo.

But Wikimedia says that because the monkey pressed the button to take the photo,Slater does not own the right to the photo and it is uncopyrightable.

Copyright law states that animals cannot own copyrights.“The term ‘authorship’ implies that, for a work to be copyrightable,it must owe its origin to a human being.Materials produced only by nature,by plants,or by animals are not copyrightable.”

Slater argues that the image was not produced only by monkey because a monkey pressed a button, but he did all the setting up.

“If the monkey took it,it owns the copyright, not me;that’s Wikimedia’s basic argument. What they don’t realize is that it needs a court to decide that.I’ve told them it’s not public domain, they’ve got no right to say that it’s public domain.”explained Slater.

1.We can infer that a monkey took photos of itself

  A.for pleasure

  B.on purpose

  C.by accident

  D.with the help of Salter

2.What made Salter angry with Wikimedia?

A.It uses images without paying money for their owners.

B.It collects images and videos without his permission.

C.It connects an image library to other websites.

D.It allows people to use the monkey’s selfie for free.

3.Salter claimed the right of the monkey’s selfie because

A.he created a background for the monkey to take photos

B.he taught the monkey how to press the button correctly

C.he prepared the camera for the monkey in advance

D.he guided the monkey to take a photo of itself

  4.The last paragraph implies that

  A.Wikimedia isn’t available for everyone

B.Slater may seek law to win his rights

C.the monkey has right of the selfie image

D.the copyright matters a lot to public domain

根據第四段的“‘...it looked like they were already posing for the camera when one hit the button,’ Slater said.‘The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it.’”

結合第六段的“...that are free to use online and allows other websites to use it free of charge,it is harming his right to make money from‘his’ photo.”

從倒數第二段的“...because a monkey pressed a button,but he did all the setting up.”

根據最后一段的“What they don’t realize is that it needs a court to decide that.”

When Armida

Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.

Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.

Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”

She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.

Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.

“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian rip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhavan orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.

  1. When hearing the news that her daughter would go on a school trip to Ecuador, Armato was _______.

  A. proud and happy

  B. supportive but concerned

  C. fearful and nervous

  D. excited but puzzled

  2. The underlined phrase “from scratch” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.

  A. having great help

  B. using high technology

  C. ending up in failure

  D. starting from the beginning

  3. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. Volunteering helps students grow and develop.

  B. School trips make parents worried about their children.

  C. Ecuador is the most attractive travel destination in the world.

  D. Brave Alexia dreams to work in Ecuador one day.
