Imagine putting a seed in a freezer, waiting 30,000 years, and then taking the seed out and planting it. Do you think a flower would grow? ??? Amazingly, scientists have just managed to do something very similar. They found the fruit of an ancient plant that had been frozen underground in Siberia — a region covering central and eastern Russia — for about 31,800 years. Using pieces of the fruit, the scientists grew plants in a lab. The new blooms have delicate white petals. They are also the oldest flowering plants that researchers have ever revived from a deep freeze. ??? “This is like regenerating a dinosaur from tissues of an ancient egg,” said University of California, Los Angeles biologist Jane Shen-Miller. ??? The plant has a long history. Back when mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses walked the land, an Arctic ground squirrel buried seeds and fruits in an underground chamber near the Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia. The ground became permafrost, a layer of soil that stays frozen for a long time. ??? Recently, Russian scientists dug out the old squirrel hole and found the plant remains 38 meters below the surface. Back at the lab, the team fed nutrients to tissue from three of the fruits to grow shoots. Then the scientists transferred the shoots to pots filled with soil. The plants produced seeds that could be used to grow even more of them. ??? It’s important for scientists to know that plant tissues can still be revived after being frozen for a long time. That’s because many researchers are trying to preserve the seeds of modern plants by freezing them and then storing them in giant lockers at various spots around the globe. One such endeavor, an underground facility in Norway, is called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It stores hundreds of thousands of frozen seeds. If a plant ever goes extinct, scientists could bring it back by taking its seeds from the Svalbard or other storage lockers. ??? “No one knows how long they are able to live for, but freezing is basically the format for many plant conservation attempts nowadays.” Shen-Miller said. It’s a good thing that at least some plants are tough enough to survive the experience.

  64. How did the fruit originally get underground? ?? A. It was placed there by an animal.

?? B. It was trapped there during the ice-age. ?? C. It was planted there by ancient farmers.

  D. It was buried there after the earthquake. 65. Why are scientists interested in this discovery? ?? A. It helps them learn how plant life has changed in the past 30,000 years. ?? B. It can help guide future efforts to protect endangered plant-life. ?? C. It can provide directions for where to look for other ancient plants. ?? D. It proves that all plant life can survive for thousands of years when frozen. 66. The underlined word “they” in the final paragraph refers to _______. ?? A. plants???B. seeds??C. scientists ??D. storage lockers 67. The purpose of the passage is to _______. ?? A. discuss a plant conservation effort

?? B. introduce some ancient plants ?? C. outline some causes of global warming

  D. describe a scientific research project

  66.【答案】B

【解析】根據前一段的最后一句“If a plant ever goes extinct, scientists could bring it back by taking its seeds from the Svalbard or other storage lockers”可知,此處的they指的應該是seeds。

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.

They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes(路線).

During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes(尖狀物)that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days.

Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.

Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.

“Your partner can save your life — you can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”

  64. Which of the following was a challenge for Corbett in climbing Half Dome?

  A. To climb up to remove the spikes.

  B. To climb it twice

  C. To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.

  D. To lock the rope in place.

  65. Why did the two men never talk about climbing when they first met?

  A. Corbett was poorly trained.

  B. Wellman had lost interest in climbing.

  C. Corbett didn’t want to hurt Wellman.

  D. Wellman hadn’t decided whether to climb again.

根據句子when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said和…Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident可知,他們沒有談論攀巖是因為Corbett不想傷害Wellman這個殘疾人的自尊。

  66. What do we know about Wellman?

  A. He climbed Half Dome by himself.

  B. He was disabled in a traffic accident.

  C. He stopped rock-climbing for some time.

  D. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.

A項課文中沒有提及;B項錯在in a traffic accident,應為in a rock-climbing accident;D項錯誤,應為Wellman挽救了Corbett的生命。

  67. The main idea of the text is that

  .

  A. two heads are better than one

  B. friendship is precious in life

  C. the disabled should never give up

  D. a man can be destroyed but cannot be defeated

There are real close ties也能說明C項正確。

  (重慶卷)A

There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckers. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled (溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”

And all that the old bucket could say was, “I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best. I’m happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”

One day, the gardener heard that kind or conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”

Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare (光禿禿的earth; on the onther side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

  56. What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean?

  out

  D. Plain-looking.

  57. What was the old bucket ashamed of?

  A. His past.

  B. His aging.

  C. His manner.

  D. His leaking.

  58. The new bucket made conversations with the old one mainly to

  A. laugth at the old one

  B. take pity on the old one

  C. show off its beautiful looks

  D. praise the gardener’s kindness

  59. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?

  A. Because it was used to keep a balance

  B. Because it stayed in its besr condition

  C. Because it was taken as a treasure

  D. Because it had its own function

Education has an important effect on the mind or physical ability of an individual. It is the process by which society passes its accumulated knowledge, skills, and values from one generation to another.

Various non- traditional education options are now available and continue to flourish(繁榮). One of the most important uses in education is the use of technology. Teachers are encouraged to use new technological devices in order to strengthen learning among students and meet the needs of various types of learners.

The right to education has been created and recognized by jurisdiction(司法). Education is the most important concern of the government of India. Recently India has gained world recognition because many students from foreign countries come here to gain higher qualifications. One has to be educated in order to speed up the growth process in order to influence the economy. Education is indeed a powerful weapon to stop the cut- throat competition that man faces at every period of life. The importance of education in India is progressing with time. Although India has been a great foundation of learning for many years, it still needs to improve not just on the quality of education but also on the number of people being educated.

Education is not just for academic success but also to make a person become a better human being and a better performer in life. Education makes the students able enough, so that they can compete nationally and internationally. To make a student a successful survivor in life, the responsibility lies equally with the schools and the parents too. Selecting a good school is as important as choosing a suitable career option for a child. The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth. It is education that gives us all the power and necessities of making a difference in any field.

The National Park Service in the United States will mark its one hundredth anniversary in 2024. As it nears its second century, the Park Service plans to increase its educational programs for students and teachers.

The plans include transportation support for one hundred thousand students each year to visit national parks to learn about nature and history. Yellowstone is believed to have been the world's first national park when it was established in 1872. Other students will get a chance to see parks in faraway places through Skype and other online programs.

The National Park Service also works with partners to provide education. One of its partners is a nonprofit organization called NatureBridge. NatureBridge is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and says one million young people have taken part in its programs. The organization works with students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and uses national parks as its classrooms. It provides field science programs at Yosemite National Park and four other locations in California and the northwestern state of Washington.

Now, NatureBridge is launching an East Coast center with a four-million-dollar grant from Google. The program will begin in April at the Prince William Forest Park in Virginia. Students stay for three to five days in NatureBridge programs. The activities are aimed at developing their science skills. For example, they learn about different soils and study water quality under a microscope.

Jason Morris is executive vice president of NatureBridge. He says when they are not sleeping, eating or in a laboratory, the students spend their time outdoors. Julia Washburn is associate director of education and interpretation for the National Park Service. She says in a time of budget cuts, the agency has to find ways to still meet its goals. Ms. Washburn says one of the most important services that the Park Service provides every day is nature interpretation. Park rangers (公園管理員) try to make visiting the outdoors more meaningful. Interpretation is a form of informal education. Essentially, it is a word that we use for the people in parks that explain the park or help orient(確定方向) you. So park rangers are interpreters. They orient you to the place you are in and help you make connections, emotional and intellectual connections, with the place.

  72. Which of the following description about NatureBridge is NOT correct?

It’s an organization working together with National Park Service to provide education.

Some of the activities held by NatureBridge are financially supported by Google.

Students from kindergarten to college can sign up for the organization’s activities.

It’s going to cut down budget for the activities because of economic hard times.

  73. In which national park will the program by East Coast centre start?

  A. Yellowstone National Park

  B.

  Prince William Forest Park

  C. Yosemite National Park

  D. Not mentioned in the passage.

  74. What’s the main idea of the passage?

National parks are used as outdoor classrooms for students.

Students are called on to join NatureBridge.

Some famous national parks in US are attractive to students.

Park rangers make visiting parks more interesting.

  75. Which of the following is the correct structure of the whole passage? (Para=paragraph)

  A.
